QUESTION FOR DISCUSSION

What is the value of the Illinois River? Consider several ways in which the value might be determined and how competing valuations can be compared.

  • How are values placed on resources?  (How can the forest be valued, economically?)
  • How are values compared? (Cost-benefit analysis)
  • What are the differences between tangible & intangible values?  (What are the tangible and intangible values of a river; what is the difference?)
  • What is meant by "the commons"?  (Who can use the Illinois River; what can they use it for; what are there rights to use it?)  (Does a privately-owned water front property have any value as a common property?)
