  1. Chapter 1 outlines five fundamental concepts that we will consider as we examine natural hazards. Provide a brief description of what you think each of these concepts means and why each is important.
    • Hazards are predictable from scientific evaluation.
    • Risk analysis is an important component in our understanding of the effects of hazardous processes.
    • Linkages exist between different natural hazards as well as between hazards and the physical environment.
    • Hazardous events that previously produced disasters are now producing catastrophes.
    • Consequences of hazards can be minimized.
  2. How can the knowledge of indigenous peoples contribute to our understanding of hazardous processes and how to deal with them? (see links under Incorporating Indigenous Knowldege below for information on what this means)
