Introduction

My house is located in the city limits of Mytown (section 24, T22N, R5W) and the land use is primarily residential with some retail businesses nearby. My family, as well as many of our neighbors, have flower and/or vegetable gardens. There’s city-owned swimming pool and a little pond on the property of Local Park. I live near Main Street's commercial/business district with shops and stores. I live a block away from a baseball diamond. There has been mining in this area in the past, but the coal mines under the town are closed. My neighbor has a cistern buried in their back yard. Across the street from us is a parking lot for the bank, that used to be a warehouse for a hardware store. The the area around where I live is relatively flat; the only steep slopes are near Blue Creek two miles to the west.

In my report, I made several important findings that may impact my neighborhood. Most of the town, including my house, was undermined for coal. Johnson's Quick Fill, two blocks from my house had a leaking underground storage tank, and the ice cream stand one block away was a gas station in the 1940's. Three blocks to the south is a small stream that floods every few years and water several feet deep occasionally covers the street. Our drinking water comes from several two hundred foot deep wells drilled into a gravel aquifer on the south edge of town. The town has a master plan that includes an industrial park 1/2 mile south of my home. The town has not considered the effects of contamination that may be present in the proposed industrial park which was once a large paint factory.
