Exercise 17: Plate Tectonics
Problem 1
- The "anomalies" referred to are the strong and weak signals recorded by a magnetometer towed above the ocean floor. Examine the map and use the annotated version to help you locate the peaks.
- Label all of the peaks and connect the peaks with the same numbers.
- Hint: they do.
- Read the lab book discussion of Divergent Boundaries (p.324-326)
- Look at Figure 17.4 on p. 327 in the lab book
- Look for information on sea-floor spreading in the text book in Chapters 3 and 10
- rate = distance/time
- half rate: use the distance from the ridge to peak 4 (time is 7 million years)
- full rate: use the distance from peak 4 to peak 4'
- calculate the rate in km per million years, then convert the answer
- 10 km/million years = 1 cm/yr (divide km/Myr by 10 to get cm/yr)
