Look at Figure 17.14 on p. 339. Can you see the offset stream channel?
An abandoned channel shows more offset.
The offset also shows up on a map. On this map, the stream sediments (alluvium) of different ages have been labeled.
If we want to know what this looked like when the younger channel first formed, we can line the two younger parts of the channel up.
If we want to know what this looked like when the older channel first formed, we can line the two older parts of the channel up.
