MIDDLE EAST
QUESTIONS

The "Middle East" contains some of the world's largest deposits of petroleum.  Please consider the following questions and the attached Map and  Worksheet regarding this important area:

  • What countries comprise the Middle East?  A map of the area has been provided, you may wish to complete the map by adding the names of the unlabeled countries.
  • Which countries contain petroleum reserves?  List the top ten countries in the world with respect to petroleum reserves. On the worksheet provided, you can indicate which are located in the Middle East.
  • Which Middle Eastern countries are important in terms transportation of petroleum?  Petroleum is transmitted primarily via pipeline and ship, considering where the oil is located, which Middle Eastern countries are important in terms transportation. (use the worksheet provided)
  • Which countries have important religious sites? (use the worksheet provided)
  • Which Middle Eastern countries are friendly to the U.S. and which are not?  What is the U.S. military role in the Middle East? (use the worksheet provided)

Now consider the following question: What do you think is appropriate United States foreign policy with respect to the Middle East and energy policy for our country?  Consider the information you have collected regarding the Middle East, information on energy resources discussed in class (what we use, what we should use in the future and the impact of use).  Your should consider what you think is appropriate, why you think it is appropriate, and why the policies are (or are not) linked.
