Exercise 6: Topographic Maps
Problem 1
- Use the LaSalle Topographic Map (Copies are provided in the lab.)
- Problems a-e: Use the map guide on page 101 to help you locate features.
- Problem b: The names of adjacent quadrangles (maps) can be found on the sides and in the corners in parentheses.
- Problem c: Longitude and latitude are measured in angular units, what is the difference between the east and west sides of the map? Between the north and south sides?
- Problem d: See the scales page. Only the first two parts are required.
- Problem f:
- Find the highest and lowest labeled contour lines. You may need to count up or down from a labeled line using the contour interval.
- To find the contour line with the highest value, examine the hills.
- To find the lowest values, think about what would collect at the lowest place in an area.
- Relief is the highest elevation minus the lowest elevation.
- Problem g: not required
- Problem h: use the contour lines to determine elevation.
- Problems i-l: Describe the location of IVCC. See the locating systems
page.

- Problem m: Locate IVCC and the Peru Mall (is it on the map?).
