Exercise 6: Topographic Maps
Problem 1
Problem 2f
Problem 4
- Drawing contour lines
- Start here
- Draw the 10 ft. contour, remember to follow the rules of contour lines (see p. 95-96) (check your work here)
- The 40 ft. contour is a but tricky because a 40 ft. contour has alread been drawn for a hill top. Your 40 ft. contour should not touch the hill top contour. (check your work here, you still need to draw the 20, 30, and 50 ft contour lines)
- To find the waterfall, look along the rivers (blue lines) and think about what might indicate a waterfall.
- Follow these steps:
- Find the the top of the hill inside the 40 ft contour. It is the one contour line that was already drawn for you.
- Convert the fractional scale (1:8,400) to a verbal scale 1 in = _____ ft (scale conversion help here).
- Measure the length and width of the hill top (inside the 40 ft contour line) in inches, convert the inches to feet using the verbal scale.
- To determine the area, multiply the length by the width.
