Exercise 6: Topographic Maps
Problem 2.f.
- Use the map on p. 110 and the graph on p. 111
- To draw the profile, follow the directions on p. 103 & 105. A simplified step-by-step is provided below; click to see an image illustrating each step.
- step 1: look at the map on p. 110, identify the index countours and determine their elevations (see image)
- step 2: remove the graph paper on p. 111 from your lab book, fold down the top of the page, lay the graph on the map so that the top of the graph is along the red A-A' line on the map, and mark the top of the graph paper where each index contour intersects the A-A' line (see image)
- step 3: label each point you have marked with the elevation of the index contour line (see image, remember to complete the rest)
- step 4: place an x or point on the elevation line directly below where you marked that elevation at the top of the graph (see image, remember to complete the rest)
- step 5: connect the dots (see image, remember to complete the rest)
- Use a ruler to draw a line from the edge of the lake (the dining room) to the top of the mountain. Is anything in the way?
- Vertical exaggeration: not required.
